Sledging in cricket is defined as the practice of disturbing the concentration of a player from the opposition team. so that he makes a mistake and gets out. Bowlers usually sledge batsmen in the presence of the wicket-keeper and other fielders in an attempt to break their flow. There is a debate in the cricket-playing countries of the world over whether sledging is good-humoured banter or poor sportsmanship. Sledging is believed to have originated during the Sheffield Shield in Adelaide, South Australia in the mid-1960s. It came into the spotlight recently after Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds alleged that Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh made a racist remark against him in the recently-concluded Test series between Australia and India in Australia.

Orginated from South Australia.Sledging is the practice in cricket of insulting opponents to break their concentration and cause them to make mistakes. Sledging is effective because the batsman stands within hearing range of the bowler and certain fielders. The aim is to intimidate or distract the batsman into making a fatal mistake and being dismissed. Sledging thus tries to "break the flow" of the batsman's game.[citation needed] There is debate in the cricketing world over whether this is poor sportsmanship or good-humoured banter.
