original name Venkataraman Aiyer Hindu philosopher and yogi called Great Master, Bhagavan (the Lord), and the Sage of Aruchala, whose position on monism (the identity of the individual soul and the creator of souls) and my (illusion) parallels that of akara (c. AD 700750). His original contribution to yogic philosophy is the technique of vicra (self-pondering inquiry).
Born to a middle-class, southern Indian, Brahman family, Venkataraman read mystical and devotional literature, particularly the lives of South Indian aiva saints and the life of Kabr, the medieval mystical poet. He was captivated by legends of the local pilgrimage place, Mt. Aruchala, from which the god iva was supposed to have arisen in a spiral of fire at the creation of the world.

He was one of the greatest Indian sages. Born in Tiruchuzhi, Tamil Nadu. After having attained liberation at the age of 16, he left home for Arunachala, a mountain considered sacred by Hindus, at Tiruvannamalai, and lived there for the rest of his life. Arunachala is located in Tamil Nadu, South India. after attaining moksha he declared himself an "Atiasrami", but he was a brahmin .. There was even a TV serial in Doordarshan titled "RAMANA HOLE" telecasted in Kannada, Hindi, Tamil and Telgu ..
