Quality is difficult to assess without actually using the product. For unknown product I would rather go by the established brand name because branding itself confirms some quality checks have been done and it is a tested product. Some items like cosmetics, packaged food articles and so on, i would rather play safe by going buy by its brand image rather than just price.

If it is a new product for me, I cannot verify quality as I never have previous experience of the item. I shall go according to brand popularity. There is no other choice. (ex. When a new shampoo is launched, I cannot verify quality until I use it)

Even if the product is not new, then also, I may wish to try another brand without knowing it's quality. (ex. While buying a mobile phone. Suppose I have Nokia, and I want to buy Motorola. I have to depend on brand name coz I cannot verify quality until I use it)

HENCE, BRAND NAME MATTERS TO A VERY LARGE EXTENT.
