Iodide salt is a marketing gimmick. Salt by itself has iodine in it and addition of additional iodine is neither desirable nor necessary. Big industrial houses in the FMCG sector sell salt by packing and branding them and at a huge price mark up. To induce people to buy this fancily packed and branded salt at a high price they advertise and spread the myth that the iodide salt is superior to generic salt. The real fact is only superiority of Iodide salt over generic salt is their price.

Iodine is added to salt to sterilize it, as most salt is taken directly from the Earth's ocean. Although it usually goes through a large cleaning process where the salt is washed, filtered and recrystallized, salt companies believed that adding iodine to salt will further sterilize it; this belief is incorrect, because of the preservative properties of salt. Nowadays, iodine is still used in salt production, because people are generally deficient in iodine. Think of iodized salt as a mineral enriched "food" (salt is not food). Iodine helps with organ functions.

Iodised salt is important because it prevents iodine deficiency. Around 2 billion people worldwide are deficient in iodine - and this is one of the leading preventable causes of mental retardation. It can also cause thyroid problems.

An easy way for the issue of iodine deficiency to be addressed is to consume a small amount of iodised salt..
