One of the great sons of India and the greatest Maratha leader, he was very secular and although himself a staunch Hindu, respected all religions. He also had great respect for women and persons of all castes and communities. His popularity can be gauged by the his photos in frames in most of the houses of Maharashtrians as well as Goans. He put a stop to Aurangzeb's advance in the south and had it not been for Moghul attacks on his kingdom because of which he had to rush back from Goa, he would have driven out the Portuguese from Goa many years before 19-12-1961, the day Goa was finally liberated by the Indian Army.
