As a tradition receptions are held as a hospitality for those who have attended the wedding. It allows the couple to be received in society, family and friends for the first time as husband and wife.Reception makes the marriage a memorable occasion. Those who attend the marriage and reception serve as a witness to the vows the couple take during ceremony. Last but not the least the invitees too share the joy of bride and bridegroom both.

Using my own mind I see a reason that wherever only close relatives & friends are invited to the wedding then to introduce the newly weds to all contacts , the reception is held.
