Michael Stipe is the lead singer of American group R.E.M, which formed in early 1980. R.E.M formed at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, and in April 1980 they formed under the name Twisted Kites to perform at a twentieth birthday party for a friend, rehearsing a number of garage, psychedelic bubblegum, and punk covers. They settled on the name R.E.M by the summer, and received their name by randomly flipping through a dictionary and spotting the abbreviation R.E.M, which is Rapid Eye Movement.
