A sauve and intellectual person Mr I K Gujral became the surprise choice for Prime Minister and replaced the incumbent H D Deve Gowda in 1997 after Congress withdrew support to the United Front.
His stints included Amabassador to the erstwhile USSR and the External affairs Minister under V P Singh t6he infamous PM , infamous for his application of the Reservation rule suggested by Mandal Commission and kept in abeyance by Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi.
