A good economist can't necessarily prove to be a good PM. One can have an endless debate as to who is/was the best PM between the two. What we need today is the clear cut policy in order to our our country march ahead towards the road of progress but MMS is failing to come up with any specific plan, you may call it the bindings of coaliation politics or the tag of being a puppet PM. The situation has worsened so much that price rise, terrorism, good governance etc. etc. are not an issue at all. What matters most these days is a pat on the back by the US and a certificate of our country emerging as a super global power.

I made a comparison of achievements and failures of both and surprised to know that both have almost equal achievements and failures. Take a look at them:
Achievements:
1) Economy grew @7% plus & 8% plus under ABV & MMS respectively.
2) Both allocated billions of dollars for infrastructure and industrialization.
3) Number of Indian Billionaires increased under both administrations.
4) Relationship with both China and U.S. improved under both.
5) India conducted nuclear test under ABV. MMS signed Nuclear deal with U.S.
6) Both tried to improve relationship with Pak.
Failures:
1) Terrorists attacked Indian Parliament and hijacked IA under ABV. Mumbai came under terrorist attack and country witnessed many such attacks almost everywhere in addition to the new menace of Maoist attacks under MMS.
2) ABV government failed to convert the GDP growth into equitable distribution of wealth among all and lost the election. MMS adopted corrupt and questionable method to hang on to pow ...more

With his fresh and different approach and out of the box thinking, Atalji won our hearts. But his partymen let him down very badly. He was first rate as a Prime Minister.
ManMohan Singh, had a shaky start, as he was selected by Sonia Gandhi.
He won the last election on his own. He is very honest, sincere and focussed in his approach to his task.
Unfortunately, he still identifies himself with the Gandhi clan. That is his biggest weakness. He should discard this clan and give a chance to more professional people like him.

I would say AB ji was a better PM because PM is a politically dominated field. An economist's mettle is tested to the core in finance ministry / treasury dept. Moreover, AB Vajpayee contested and won the elections himself whereas Dr. MMS ji was appointed as PM by Sonia Gandhi, who won and contested elections.

But as PM post is a politically dominated field, I would say AB ji made a better candidate.

Both have their strengths and weaknesses. One thing they are similar in is that they were never quick or decisive and don't like to ruffle any feathers in their party. AB Vajpayee never took a stand against Modi and many other things. Manmohan Singh too is culpable to similar errors. I think it is difficult to say one is much better than the other.
