No they are not. Can never be.

It's the team work... expertise, toil, experience, input of unsung contributors which collectively makes an individual a champion. From the manager to the sponsor, the pit boys to manufacturers of gear / machine... everyone is involved and if one fails... all fell down!

Would like to give example from my favorite sport please - MotoGP.

Historic move of Valentino Rossi from Honda to Yamaha is known but the astounding fact is with Rossi, his team manager at Honda - Jeremy Burges - and a dozen of the crew moved in too! That's making of a champion! Honda never won again until 2006... Why? If they need just an individual - A rider - its nothing difficult. One of the key reason was the team disintegration. And its history how Rossi won world championship titles on Yamaha and still continuing. Do you mean to say the time one competes himself to excel himself? Competition means to strive against others to achieve some kind of gain. If one competes with himself then it is certainly individual. I am not sure whether I got your question right.
