The area got its name from a cantonment built for a garrison of troops from the eighteenth-century Sikh misl of Hoshiarpur; 30,000 troops were garrisoned in Delhi following a defeat of the Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II.This was the period that the great gurudwaras of Old Delhi were built. .
