And beating the guys at the local chess club is only the start. Getting this good will be a full time job and it will take years. And you still might only get as far as candidate master.',

two Use the tactics trainers you can find on many websites. These present simple tactical puzzles for you to solve. Do about fifteen minutes a day, more is a waste because you will not remember it. These help you recognise basic tactical tricks while you are playing.

three Play slow chess and use the available time to think. Not only do you have to practice thinking ahead, but if you are thinking ahead, you have the opportunity to discover tactical patterns yourself, which is easier to memorise.
