Depends upon the purpose and use of the camera. If its point & shoot choose the one that suits your pocket.
For DSLR's Canon and Nikon are top competitors. Canon has better picture quality, choise of lenses wheras Nikon has better ergonomics. Olympus, Pentax, are good alternatives.

Purely depending upon your choice and need. if you are a professional, or like to impress everyone with your cam-goodie, choose Nikon, otherwise Canon. Sony makes wonderful cameras but its not their core speciality, they are giants in electronics especially in music and TVs, Canon had always been Camera guys, they know it inside out.

Choosing cameras is dependent on many factors such as indoor shooting, outdoor shooting, shooting landscapes, far-off mountains, greenery etc. If you just need to shoot indoors u dont need much optical zoom but when you want to shoot outdoors then you need to camera which has good optical zoom not less than 10x.
The results of Canon Powershot series is very good compared to other models. It gives crisp and clear images with the click of a button. The camera is really fast and is ready within a fraction of a second.

To be frank Nikon and Canon are also very tough competition for Sony. Hence if you want to buy the best then you can fall back upon any of these three brands. I have asked many professional photographers about their choice and they say that nikon is the clear winner. Nikon has excellent clarity and picture quality. There are many models to check out.

Obviously nikon coz its the one who comes up wid advanced features -it provides the entire range from professional cameras to the one which can be used by the amateurs.
