I tell non-Muslims that Allah created everything in this universe. They ask me who created Allah ? How can Allaah have been there since the beginning?
How can I answer them ?

This question has nothing to do in particular with Islam. This is an age old Qn like whether chicken came first of egg came first. One significant point forgotten here is that neither the Qnr or the answerer comprehends the possibility of GOD always existing.
Nothing is created, something always existed, that unchanging something is GOD.....and it itself (He, Hi,self) takes form of the ever changing world out of itself(Himself)! Science also says matter or energy can neither be created or destroyed, it can only be changed from form to another!
