As Mr. A.Moin has rightly said that Burkha was used by men and women both during travelling in deserts. Burkha becomes vital to protect from the desert stroms. The men used to wear White arabic dresses that also used to protect them from heat. It is a scientifically froved theory that white dresses reflect the heat and sunlight. But since the arabic areas had numerous tribes which had their own rules for their tribes. These tribes and the tribal chieftains did not had any respect for the women. They used to trade women for money and power. The more women a trbal chief had in his Harem his power was greater in the region. This chiefs used to bear women as and when they wanted. The women were used as an entertainment to the guests and the men of the tribe. The women were sold in the market as slaves. These sort of conditions were nowhere present in the entire world at that times.

Burkha is a very useful thing:
"Burkha ek aisi cheez hai jisko pehan lene se aap sabko dekh sakte hai pe aapko koi nahi dekh sakta"

To protect u against dust storms which were a daily event in Saudi Arabia. Burkha's were worn by ladies in Saudi long long b4 Islamic times.
