Q.

I have read in the reports that there is not a single Muslim candidate of BJP in Gujarat in the assembly elections. What could be the reason for this?

One has to be a reasonably active party member to get ticket from a major political party to contest in election. Probably BJP in Gujarath does not have any great Muslim leaders in the party who could be considered for being given a ticket.(this could be the main reason) Media instead of blindly sensationalizing the issue should come out with a list of prominent Muslim BJP leaders in Gujarath and raise the question why these people are not given the ticket. Is it because of their religion? They have not done it probably because they too don't know of any BJP member from Muslim community in Gujarat who deserve to be given a ticket.

I am not in favor of measuring the attitude of a political party towards any particular caste or religion by the number of candidates they field. The activities of elected members will be in line with the ideology or political program and irrespective of the religious or caste identity. They are individuals with personal and group interest. They need to cater to those. Such catering is possible only if the candidates win. The winning prospect is more important. If a Muslim candidate was in a position to win, Narendra Modi, would certainly would not be refusing. It brings victory and as well as a good liberal tag.
