Both are top brands.Dell has always been one of the leaders in the laptop industry as far as costs go. By selling all of their laptops direct, they avoid selling through retailers,they then pass on the savings to you.One noticeable difference between Dell vs HP is their looks. Dell tends to have a standard look while HP has a more glossy look. Dell and HP systems are pretty similarly priced right now but HP only offers 1200 x 800 screens. Dell offers 1200 x 800 or 1440 x 900 or 1680 x 1050.Dell has a very easy to use driver support page and I can't stand finding correct HP drivers.So maybe Dell could be given the first preference.

HP has just started offering Inter Core Duo. Dell has excellent technical support as well.

Neither, Both breakdown pretty easily. Apple is better :) Just argumentative sake..... Heres the real pic Both Dell and HP are assemblers and they do not (or to a certain extent) are not yet into design of the entire infrastructure, they but different pieces like motherboard cpu etc to generic specifications or get them manufactured and then put it together. on other hand companies like apple and IMB (Not lenovo) put in reasearch and hard work to design a particular architecture for the packaged perfomance, though both apple and lenovo are moving away from that paradim a bit now, they to date still remain to be manufacturers or architected machines. That being said, Dell or HP are just as good as a knowledgeble assembler you can find in your locality mom-pop shop.

HP is better in terms of quality and technilogy. Dell is waste in all terms i.e. quality, technolgy and customer service.
