MF investment carry a higher risk as compared to Fixed Deposits and PPF. In General the rule is Higher the risk you take, higher the returns you can earn. Thus returns from mutual funds are very much higher than Fixed returns. The average returns from MF are 15 to 20% over three to 5 years. The Key to making reasonable returns is to stay invested for a longer period and enjoy higher returns through the power of compounding.
Some of the Top performing MF are Reliance Growth, Reliance Vision, Magnum Global, Magnum Taxgain, Sundaram Capex Opp, HDFC Equity, Franklin India Prima

MF returns, in general, are better than the returns from other modes like PPF and FDs etc. So, if returns are your concern, MFs should prove good - however, you will need to have a long term horizon and patience. Don't expect very high returns in a very quick timeframe.
Second, there are several good AMCs out there - ICICI, SBI, Fidelity, Franklin Templeton, Reliance, UTI and so on. The choice of the mutual fund has to be yours, do research, ask around for advice, and then determine what is best for you. Please do not take the words of others at face value - always validate others' advice.

THE RETURNS FROM MFS HAVE BEEN REDUCED NOW AND NOT AS 2004 TO 2005 MAY 15TH.HOWEVER IT IS BETTER THAN FIXED DEPOSITS IF WE INVESTED THE FUNDS LIKE FIDILITY,HSBC,HDFC,SBI,SUNDARAM BNP BARIBAS ETC.IF U LIKE TO TAKE RISK INVEST IN EQTY FUNDS OR OTHERWISE MIXED FUNDS IN WHICH A PORTION ONLY WILL BE INVESTED IN EQTY AND OTHER IN DEBT FUNDS WHERE NO RISK AND THE RETURN WILL BE MINIMUM

A piece of advise: Don't put all youe eggs in one basket. Watch the performance of different MFs for some time before investing. Diversify your portfolio: PPF, FDRs and MFs, may be considered for investment.
