Since you got two wiki answers...let me add something to it---she was so wrapped up enjoying her rich, lavish life that she did not know what a common person goes through to get food on table. Somebody told her that common man is so poor that they can't even afford to eat bread......Marie Antoinette said --if they can't afford bread, why don't they eat cake? She was so clueless...:-)

The French Queen Marie Antoinette who said " If they don't have bread , why don't they eat cake?"
Maria Antonia Josepha Johanna von Habsburg-Lothringen (French: Marie Antoinette Josphe Jeanne de Habsbourg-Lorraine, IPA: [mai twant]; Vienna, 2 November 1755 Paris, 16 October 1793) was an Archduchess of Austria and the Queen of France and Navarre. She was the fifteenth and penultimate child of Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Francis I.
At the age of fourteen, on the day of her marriage to Louis-Auguste, Dauphin of France, she became Dauphine de France. At the death of King Louis XV, in May 1774, her husband ascended the French throne as Louis XVI, and Marie Antoinette assumed the title of Queen of France and Navarre.

Marie Antoinette was born November 2, 1755 in Vienna, Austria. She was the youngest and most beautiful daughter of Francis Stephen I and Maria Theresa, Emperor and Empress of the Holy Roman Empire. Marie Antoinette was brought up believing her destiny was to become queen of France. She married the crown prince of France in 1770. Four years later she became queen when her husband was crowned King Louis XVI (House of Bourbon).
Antoinette followed her husband to the guillotine on October 16, 1793. She was executed without proof of the crimes for which she was accused. She was only 37 years old.
