Total station Theodolite is a modern electronic/optical surveying instrument. Advantages are !) Inexpensive means of fast, high precision measurements 2) Does not need the sky..can be used in a mine , in a room, under tree cover etc 3) suited to take ground measurements and best at ground cordinates 40 you need not necessarily occupy the point you are measuring . Using more advamced functions such as offsets, resections etc you can measure a point indirectly through combinations of multiple angular and or distance measures
