In serious situations, where more thinking and planning are needed, keeping cool and allowing some time to analyze different options before suggesting solution to reduce the seriousness is the method I use. I guard my tongue especially, not to worsen the situation.

Ask somebody able to take control who is not connected with situation in any way......if possible.
Everybody panics , more or less, in a serious situation and can do mistakes......For this reason Doctors don't operate their own family member.......judges don't decide their own case......

Try to understand the situation
think positively and act sensibly
try not to add more tensions to others.say relieving words.seeing others relaxed{peaceful} faces itself can reduce the seriousness of that situation.
