Osteoporosis is a disease of dysregulation of the calcium storage mechanism. It has very little to do with how much milk you drink, because people with osteoporosis are wasting their calcium. The best treatment available now are the bisphosphonate drugs, one of which (Fosamax or alendronate) is now generic and so quite cheap. These are once-a-week or once-a-month drugs. There is also a once-a-year IV infusion as an alternative. These drugs have been wonderful for reducing fractures and hospital stays in people with low bone density and osteoporosis. Talk to your physician about them, they are routinely prescribed.
In addition there is mounting evidence that the bisphosphonates can prevent the metastatic progression of breast cancer, possibly also other cancers that tend to metastasize to bone.
