Try to divert his attention from the sad incident he is thinking about and take him/her out in the garden to see flowers, greenery and talk about something humorousor happy incidents. This could make the person happy again.

Everyone wants to know that they are loved and appreciated. Encourage them to follow their dreams, especially if no one else will. Find a way to tell them how much they mean to you, even if you have to do it causally or inconspicuously. (Ex. When introducing this person to a friend, say, This is my best friend, So-And- So. Youll love him hes the absolute best!) Be caring and compassionate in all your dealings. Most importantly of all, let them know then theyre being self-destructive. If theyre in a bad relationship, making poor life choices, or squandering their talents, find a gentle way to discuss it with them. Whether or not they listen is up to them, but at least you took the time to be honest.

Get them outside; the fresh air and sunshine, even the filter sun that makes it's way through the clouds, will improve their spirits. Keep the conversation light and happy, and of course a hug helps, too...
