The word Brazil comes from a native tree called 'Pau Brasil'. This huge tree was used to be very abundant in the Brazilian territory, it was discovered when Portuguese colonizers first arrived. The wood was used to produce a red pigment used in dying and the extensive and abusive exploitation of this natural resource almost led to its extinction.
