Ali is the central figure at the origin of the Shia / Sunni split which occurred in the decades immediately following the death of the Prophet in 632. Sunnis regard Ali as the fourth and last of the "rightly guided caliphs" (successors to Mohammed (pbuh) as leader of the Muslims) following on from Abu Bakr 632-634, Umar 634-644 and Uthman 644-656. Shias feel that Ali should have been the first caliph and that the caliphate should pass down only to direct descendants of Mohammed (pbuh) via Ali and Fatima, They often refer to themselves as ahl al bayt or "people of the house" [of the prophet].

Prophet Mohammad pbuh himself said that there will be 73 different sects in Islam before the last day and only one of them will go to heaven.
So, making sects are totally human act and neither the prophet nor the religion support it
He was aware of past, present and future.

The sects were there all the time in Prophet (pbuh)all the time.Because what ever information was send by Allah to our Prophet(pbuh) he would inform the people after Salaat's Some of the people used to agree with him but some of them would just do differently. The only Ali (as) was the one who followed exactly the way our Prophet (pbum) told everyone. & that is is the same way all Shia's been following .As far as Salaat question is concerned all shia do & definitely belive in 5 x,s prayers but it was allowed per shairah to join them together so not to find a reason of not praying e.g i didn't get a time . I got busy with work .The way we get time to eat times in a day , the same way they joined 2 salaats together for Dhur & Assar together because the timings fall into same time frame ( as sun is shining bright) , & Maghrib & isha together be/c they also fall into same time frame. Saying prayers is must to do in islamic shariat rather than not saying at all .So if a person is wise he ...more

The differences in these sect are not based mainly on religious preachings but rather more of political differences.
