This is to construct a canal between the southern coast of India and the northern coast of Sri Lanka in the Palk Strait. At present, large ships have to go around the island of Sri Lanka. The Sethusamadaran Canal Project will originate from Tuticorin, extend to the north-north-east direction, cut through Adams Bridge and end in the Bay of Bengal opposite Point Calimere.

The Sethusamudram Shipping Canal Project is the proposed link between the Palk Bay and the Gulf of Mannar. It is situated between India and Sri Lanka. It proposes to do so by creating a shipping channel through the Sethu Samudram (a shallow sea) and through the island chain of Adam's Bridge (also called Rama's Bridge). It is an 83-kilometre-long deepwater channel. The project was conceived in the year 1860 by Alfred Dundas Taylor, but has recently been approved by the government of India.
