Although it was a combination of both, the first practice was more predominant. Such customs were generally prevalent in North India amongst the Rajputs. We could remember how Padmini had committed suicide voluntarily after the death of her husband, Raja Ratnasen after he was killed in the battle against Alauddin Khilji. They opined that there was no meaning in life after their life partners pass way. Now this practice has been strictly prohibited. William Bentinck played a vital role for the same.
