Liberal studies may also be considered "liberal arts." It consists of studying various subjects to acquire a broad base of knowledge in many areas rather than in one particular area. It is thought to make one a more well-rounded person and generally better critical thinker. ',

Most universities in the U.S. may be considered "liberal arts" schools because, in addition to studying one's particular major, a student is required to take what are sometimes called "breadth" courses: courses in fields not related to one's specialization e.g., a certain amount of math, English, social studies, ethnic/race studies. In addition to knowledge in their specialized areas, liberal studies give a student knowledge in several additional subject areas. Universities differ from technical colleges in this way; technical colleges require the student to study _only_ his/her specialization not social studies, ethnic studies, etc..
