In the legendary age when cosmic ocean was churned to get Elixir, first poison was produced which was drunk by Lord Siva; but to save Him His Concert Goddess Sakti held His throat in order to stop poison getting into the stomach of the Lord. The poison stopped there created blue colour to His throat and from then on He is called as Neelakandha!
