According to most reliable sources, apart from the initial 2 districts in West Bengal that were said to be affected by bird flu, it has spread to fresh areas in affected districts of Howrah, Birbhum and Nadia, while a large number of chickens died in North 24-Parganas which is still not among the 13 affected districts. Samples from these three districts have already tested positive. Bird flu not something to be treated lightly, and whether the threat is valid or not all precautions should be taken. There is a possibility of the virus spreading through poultry, and with fears of the same, the poultry industry has once again suffered. Considering the serious implication of the situation, the Union Health Ministry has directed the West Bengal government to adopt quarantine measures to prevent transport of people, animals and birds from the bird flu-hit areas of Birbhum and South Dinajpur districts.
