Shreya Ghoshal's family is originally from Bengal. She grew up in Rawatbhata, a small town near Kota, Rajasthan. Her father is employed at the Bhabha Atomic Research Center in the capacity of nuclear power plant engineer for the Nuclear Power Corporation of India She has inherited her musical talent from her mother.
When she was only four years old Shreya began accompanying her mother on the harmonium. She began her training in Hindustani classical music under Maheshchandra Sharma in kota.
As a child, Shreya won the kids special episode of Sa Re Ga Ma Pa contest on Zee TV. Kalyanji was one of the judges at this competition, and he was the person who convinced her parents to move to Mumbai. Shreya trained under Kalyanji for one and a half year and later continued her training under Mukta Bhide.
