It is not true, not any more. People now have more interaction and they know fully well that all the south Indians whether Keralites ,Kannads Telugus cannot be termed as Madrasis ,as Biharis,UPeans, cannot represent all the North Indians. Some one has correctly said, in Foreign lands all the people from sub-continent are called Indians.Remember Shahrukh preferred beind labelled as Asian rather than an Indian and the rest is now a history.

Previously before division all southern states were under a common administration called "Madras State"
Madras State also included coastal parts of modern-day Andhra Pradesh, northern Kerala (Malabar) and Bellary and Dakshin Kannada districts of Karnataka. It was reduced to its present extent by 1956. That's why people still call that way in North India. So nothing to worry about.

The Madrasi is a derogatory term. It is an ethnic slur. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madrassi)
It is some what equivalent to Chaprasi. Madrasi means according to North indians, fools who have lesser IQ. Madrasis are shown in a negative way in all the hindi movies. The Madrasis are not like Bihari. Biharis think they are the most intelligent people whose fertility rate is above 4 where as the poor madrasis have 1 or 2 children. Since the North indians are jealous of South indians, they lump all the south indians as 'Sala Madrasi' meaning madrasi assholes. IT IS NOTHING BUT PURE JEALOUSY.

This clearly speaks the illiteracy of the person asking the question. There was a time when people used to ask this question, I think, not these days.
