We have been told do not open the refrigerator door every five seconds. This is because it actually costs you around a quarter everytime you open up that door. If you're just browsing around for food you might want to reconsider opening up that door just to take a look around. That peek costs you more than you think.

Your air conditioning/heater is also one thing that keeps that bill running high. If its during the summer, don't keep the air down to 50 just because you're tired of being hot. If you keep it set around 75 the house stays comfortable, and you don't end up paying a fortune.

Other machines that use a great deal of electricity include the washing machine and the drier. Watch out how many times you wash you clothes, and never use the drier just to get those wrinkles out. If you cut back on these two things, you will be stunned by the difference in your bill.

Now on to the smaller devices that don't use that much power, but do in the long run add up to quite a bit of ...more

Use energy efficient gadgets (star rating should be as high as possible). Avoid using electrical gadgets if you can. Use sparingly.

Conserving the environment and saving electricity is a socially very responsible thing to do. While we sit here, in our town homes, with ACs and Fans continuously switched on, there are villages, scores of villages where people have no electricity and water.

Recently I had gone to Gujarat on a trip, and I discovered one village where they had 24 hours power and water. And they used it in phases to conserve it. It was brilliant. Apparently the Gujarat Government innovated to get them 24 hours of supply of power and water, and its the only village in India to have that. I found a case study on them online - check it out .
