As with most beneficial scientific and technological discoveries, genetic recombination procedures do have harmful downsides. One of the most highly-debated aspects of genetic recombination involves the testing of the technology on animals. The Boyd Group estimates that more than 350 000 animals annually are used in genetic modification procedures.

Sheep, for example, have been spliced with human genes to allow them to produce in their mils alpha-1 antitrypsin a chemical used to treat chronic lung conditions in humans. Similarly, spider genes have been spliced into a goad to allow the animal to secrete a valuable silk-like substance that prevents the clotting of blood in humans. Cows have been given additional genes to increase their production of casein, a substance heightening the amount of protein and solids in milk. These are just a few of the tens of thousands of animal-based genetic engineering experiments that occur across the world each year.
