Because it's 400 years old! Language changes. Many of Shakespeare's words are now obsolete, or would be if they hadn't been used in some of the greatest literature of all time, and we've developed new constructions that didn't exist in his time. In addition, Shakespeare used a great many figures of speech and allusions in his writing: When Juliet longs for the day to end so that she and Romeo can have their wedding night, she says, "Gallop apace, you fiery-footed steeds!" She's referring to the Greek myth in which the sun was a chariot driven across the sky, and she's urging the horses puliing it to go faster. It would be simpler to have her say, "Come on, sun! Set!"--but less beautiful.

However, is it really that hard? Look at the opening lines of almost any of his plays. You know what those characters are saying. And what's hard about "Friends, Romans, countrymen! Lend me your ears!"? We may not say "Lend an ear" very often, but we do say :"Lend a hand."
