Q.

Hon'ble Pranab Mukherjee is going to be next President of India. There is a campaign in West Bengal that, at last a Bengali is going to be in one of the two top seats of India, the other being Prime Minister. I am against such feelings. His success is his own individual and state of West Bengal has nothing to do with it except that the members of electoral college from this state participated in elections.

I agree with you on this observation. Unfortunately, even after 65 years of independence we are not able to get rid of this parochial feelings to a large extent. It is widely prevalent every where. In the last presidential election, the Shiv Sena supported the candidature even if the choice of a insignificant rank outsider, all for one obvious reason. It makes you wonder, are we selecting our Head of State of a tribe, be it bengalis or punjabis or tamilians ? Don't we have any vestige of being part of a nation? I wonder why people exult so much just because some body from their State has become the President!!! Has Patil done anything for her State? On the contrary, she and her entourage must have been a burden on the State as and when her family members visited the home State. Soon after she became president, her husband who was I believe just a panchayat president wanted nothing less than a Mercedez Benz convoy for himself!! These are the kind of leaders who sit at the top and be it ...more

Very true soumyen! It's just becoz of pranab mukherjee's own qualities, his abilities and accomplishments that he has been proposed the presidential nominee by the UPA, not becoz he is a bengali.... Here, bengali people being communal and rejoicing is simply meaningless... Pranab mukherjee firstly is an indian and then a bengali.......

Our national integration is not complete/we consider ourselves as secular but demands reservations on basis of caste and not for economically weaker sections/under circustances we should divide india into 4 parts, north south east and west limit president terms for 3 years and post by rotation to all four parts/bengal has given best leaders in fight for independnce and tmamtaji have also shown bengali spirit by not supporting on statewise basis unlike bal thackery who supported pratibhji and we know what happened thereafter, pratibhaji spend 192 crores on foreign travel./did not have a time to decideterrorist afzal guru prayer /our innocent security people were killed in this terror attack on parliament/my india where players get crores, but persons who died in defending highest institute get comparatively meagre compensation and the worst part is crimnals enjoy stay in jails without any exemplary punishment

I fully endorse your veiw in the matter friend, I would have been happy if they had said that AN Indian is going to be the President of India, instead of say a Maharashtrian or Bengali becoming President

But dear, sir, most of the Bengali people want o see a BENGALI President. If Mamata goes against this wind she may lose some of her votes. In this case party matters little. It is the post n the person which matters.
