We often wonder why we get hiccups, but later make ourselves believe that its gods way of showing somebody is thinking of us. Well the actual cause of a hiccup is a contraction of our diaphragm, the muscular membrane in our chest that plays an important breathing. Inhaling contracts the diaphragm and exhaling relaxes it. A post-Thanksgiving distended stomach can bother the diaphragm causing an erratic spell of hiccups. Stress and exercise can also trigger hiccups. However this spasmodic reflex has no obvious cause. According to one theory hiccups may be a remnant of a primitive sucking reflex. Whatever the ancient function suggests, the involuntary and useless action can be very annoying. Man have found reliable methods of getting rid of it like-you can hold the breath for sometime, give yourself a good scare, sucking on grains of sugar and drinking water upside down. The motives behind these methods are to halt the rhythm of respiration.

It happens because when we eat some spicy foood, our neck goes thirst, thus symbolises to drink a lot of water so that the neck and the stomach could be saved from thirstness.
