Mujibur Rahman was the first President when Bangladesh became independent after the Indo Pak war of 1971. He was the leader of the Awami League and was the front runner in the struggle of East Pakistan to become an independent country. He was assassinated in 1975 (if I remember the year correctly) along with many of his family members in a military coup. His daughter Shaikh Hasina Wazed escaped being killed on that fateful day.

Sheikh Mujib-ur-Rehman was instrumental in the creation of Bangladesh. He was a leader of East Pakistan and stood against Zulfikar Bhutto (and was the PM candidate) in an election held in Pakistan before 1971. He won and was to become the PM of Pakistan. But the Urdu (Punjabi,Sindhi and Balochi) speaking West Pakistan could not digest the fact that a Bengali speaking man will be the next PM. Bhutto was in the forefront of this revolt. Martial Law was imoposed, Gen Yahya Khan took over. The election was declared null and void. And West Pakistan army was unleashed on East Pakistan. Much atrocities like r*ape, looting and killing was resorted to by Army. Refugees started entering India. A war was declared in 1971 and Bangladesh was created withe the defeat of West Pakistan. All this time Sheikh Mujeeb-ur-Rehman was the leader of the Bengali speaking East Pakistanis. He is declared the father of Bangladesh.
