Pongal is a festival of harvesting in South India. During this season, the yields of the new crops will be ready. As rice is the main crop in South India, people will make the Pongal, a dish made up of rice and jaggery. Sweet Pongal is made. Besides this, other conventional dishes are also made. During the three day festival (Bhogi, Sankranti and Kanuma), on the first day (Bhogi), please make fire with unwanted materials like old papers etc and all family members will sit or stand around this fire. On second day which is the actual festival of Sankranti, the elders will be honoured in the family with new clothes. Further, the passed away people in the family will be remembered on that day. On the last day (Kanuma), which is a festival of animals, the cattle will be decorated and Pujas will be performed.
