Conjunctivitis (commonly called "pinkeye" or "Madras eye" is an acute inflammation of the conjunctiva (the outermost layer of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids is called Madras Eye The name is so very popular that lot many people dont know that it has got another name. Looks like it is also referred to as Pink Eye for some reason.

During the Bangaladesh war in nineteen seventy the conjunctivitis spread from Bangaladesh (formerly called as East Bengal) and it was called "JAI BANGLA". Subsequently when the disease spread in different other part of the country it was attached with the big metro city situated nearby and called with the name of the city. When first Madras Eye was spreading in Coimbatore they used to tell the patients as 'CHENNAI KANNAN'. In other places in India, when someone used to have this problem it would spread across to everyone and within no time half the town will be sporting funny looking goggles claiming that they have got Madras Eye.
