Naxalism is a brand name for Communist ideology of Marxist-Leninist variety, which burst out on the Indian scene as a radical romantic, revolutionary political creed in the Spring of 1967. Basically- the step that revolution starts in the villages and spreads to the cities ,spearheaded by peasents. This is different from your typical M/L "Marxist Leninist" outlook which states that revolutions should start in the cities, spearheaded by the urban proletariat and the intelligensia- and then spread to the countryside.

In a "typical" Marxist / Leninist outlook- the "Chief proponents" of a revolution would be the Urban working class & the educated class- the intelligensia. In a more Naxal outlook- the "Chief Proponents" of a revolution would be the agrarian peasentry. Urban proletariats & the intelligensia in Naxalism (versus M/L ism) take on very secondary places in the whole "Socialist Revolution"- which is the basic ideology of the Naxalite movement.

Their rationale is that India is a majority non agrarian nation.
