Q.

The reason why politicians are against pub culture is not anything to do with pubs or drinking but to have a control over women and their lifestyles. Women should not be allowed any freedom to choose the life they want. What is your opinion?

You are mistaken in blaming politicians who will adopt any position to gain votes. The problem is there are too many puritans who cannot bear the thought that somewhere there are people who are enjoying themselves! This alas is the legacy of Muslim and Christian rule in India. (That idiot MK Gandhi too was a puritan!) Women with economic clout can create their own drinking clubs where entrance is permitted only to members and their guests. If you choose to frequent pubs with "shop-front" windows then you may expect a reaction from puritans!

It is not only the politicians - there are many people including women who do not like women visiting pubs. This is true not only of India - it is there everywhere. Even in western countries, it was there in sixties. Also it has been happening from ancient times. Men had always been trying to deny freedom to women in every civilization in every age. Manu, the law giver of Hindus had stated, "The father guides women in their childhood, the husband guide them in their youth and the sons guard them in their old age. So women are not fit to enjoy freedom" In other words they should be always under the subjugation of men. It was same in Egypt, in Christian world, in Islam and so on. Christianity propagated that women have an evil effect on men. A Gargi or a Maitreyee or a Cleopatra or a Queen Mary or Catherine are exceptions and that proves the law. The only man who tried to reform this wrong notion was Buddha, who inducted nuns in the Buddhist monasteries and gave them equal po ...more

This way of forcing women to stay indoors can rightly be compared to Talibanism & it is a shame on our society that such Goonda elements are openly airing their views of harassing women & no strict action is being taken against them ...lot has to be done but the men in power are blunderers themselves ..how could we expect anything from them ..!! Our democracy is being ridiculed everyday ..!!

The whole show was started by MORAL policing. Who in the first place has appointed them. Blame the MEDIA in the first place for not reporting the matter to the POLICE that SO n SO pub is about to be taken over by MORAL police ONLY to gain political mileage. Tough TIMES do not LAST, TOUGH PEOPLE DO. Where do these men go to when they are INJURED. Are they not being attended by women AS NURSES? Is the INDIAN CULTURE destructive in nature!

The reason is that they're just plain stupid. They don't know how to tackle big issues like supplying water, electricity to thousands of areas and terrorists will come and terrorists will go but these politicians will go on forever....blabbing self righteously about how the west has badly influenced the Indian culture! The whole country may be in flames but they will pick on small issues like whether women are frequenting pubs. They're like Nero who played the fiddle while Rome burned.

To be honest with you my dear good comrade Jyoti.........don't take offense, but the whole culture of "moral policing" was started by women's rights vanguards. I remember sometimes in late 70s plus, we started seeing women's rights "vigilantes" mainly in villages & towns, who'd sort of band together and go around forcefully closing down liquor shops and bhang processing units in their localities.... That's about when the "moral wave" spread in India. ....and it was HUGE cheap publicity, and eventually political groups caught on to it. This ban on pubs is simply right wing induced social constipation. Make an issue out of non issues because right wing is too genetically stupid to envision something constructive. These SAME politicians also illegalized brothels, hukkah parlours, bhang dispensaries, beach parties....and about every thing fun in India, which males also frequent, so it's not only women. ANd also, nowadays you don't ha ...more

Is pub the only place where women mix and mingle and even drink? If not in the pubs they will meet at some friend's house or even organise small get togethers. Once one gets the taste of this kind of life style nothing can stop them. The pub guys will also think of some novel ideas.
