Monopoly is a board game in which players try to enrich themselves by developing Atlantic City, New Jersey, real estate. Unemployed sales representative Charles B. Darrow of Germantown, Pennsylvania, invented the game in 1934. Darrow sold five thousand handmade sets to a Philadelphia department store before selling the rights to Parker Brothers. By 1935 Monopoly had become the best-selling game in America. By century's end, some 200 million Monopoly sets had been sold in eighty countries worldwide and in twenty-six different languages, spawning a variety of derivative products, including a twenty-five-thousand-dollar gold and silver set built by Alfred Dunhill of London in 1974.
