Rajnikanth's 2002 film Baba was a huge failure at the box office so the actor repaid the losses incurred by the distributors.
Rajni was condemned for spoiling Tamil youth, as he smoked, drank alcohol and posed with beedis in the film. Pattali Makkal Katchi volunteers attacked theatres screening the film, usurped film rolls and burnt them. Rajnikanth kept away from acting for a while.
