The term 3G refers to telecommunication hardware and is an acronym for third generation. It offers higher data rates than previous versions and as of October 2009 is the fastest technology available for data transfer.
Capabilities
1. 3G makes it possible for you to watch video, surf the Internet, download files, access email and multitask on your cell phone faster than before.
Technical Requirements
2. To use 3G services you need a 3G-capable phone. 3G services are offered only where your carrier's hardware has been upgraded. You can check your carrier for availability.
Carriers
3. AT&T, Sprint and Verizon all offer 3G services, and T-Mobile has yet to upgrade its hardware to 3G.
History
4. The first version was called 1G and was started during the early 1980s. The second version, known as 2G, was launched in the '90s.
Tip
5. Keep in mind that not all networks are created equal. If you are in the market for a 3G cell phone, make certain 3G technology available in your area.
