-ticket: You can book an i ticket only if there is a 2-day gap between the booking date and the travel date. This is to allow time for the ticket to be couriered to you. The ticket will be couriered to either one of the addresses that you have specified while you registered on irctc website, or to any other address you specify at the time of booking. There is no option currently to change the name of the recipient - it will be sent in your name. You can book an i-ticket even if the status is 'waiting list' (as opposed to 'confirmed' and 'RAC').
e-ticket: If you book an e-ticket, no ticket will be couriered to you. Instead, you need to take a print of the ticket that appears on the website after you book it. While booking, you will be required to provide some details of a personal identification document (like driving licence number, passport number etc) and you MUST carry this identification document along with your printed ticket when you travel.

I-Tickets -delivered to the customer at his desired address through courier. On I-Tickets (including Tatkal), confirmed / RAC / WL status tickets will be booked. For E-Tickets, however, the ticket will be allowed to be booked only for Confirmed or RAC status tickets. For E-ticket - The user can take a printout of the Electronic Registration Slip (ERS) and perform the journey, duly carrying the authorized Original Identity Card details of which were given at the time of booking. For e-reservations-the ticket can be booked up to the chart preparation time for the train.

1) i-ticket is one in which the ticket is couriered, where as e-ticket is that in which one had to take the print out after booking.
2)Secondly,i-ticket in i ticket one has to provide the address to which the ticket is sent where as in e-ticket no address is required.
3) One can book an i ticket only if there is a 2-day gap between the booking date and the travel date. This is to allow time for the ticket to be couriered to you .No 2 day gap is required in e-ticket
