He got the Mahavir Chakra for bravery when he went down with his ship the Khukri during the 1971 war when the ship was struck by 3 torpedoes. INS Khukri Memorial was built in his memory and of his men who also lost their lives at that time.

If I am correct, I think he was captain of INS Kukri and as is the tradition, he sank with INS Kukri during Indo-Pakistan war when the ship was torpedoed by Pakistani submarine.
