Mission to moon is a goal, and a goal is needed to keep any scientific mind - going. But then the methodology? Cannot ISRO be structured in such a way that it earns while it researches? Shouldn't ISRO avoid being accused of consuming taxpayers' money by having a commercial wing that focusses on earning revenue for ISRO while a parallel core wing focusses on space research. It is a model of management whereby every cynic who says that an illiterate and poor majority of India cannot afford this luxury, will be silenced.

The same question can be asked in respect of any number of things. If we are to have a pride of place in the comity of nations, such a step is sooner the better as it is a showcase of our progress in science and technology.

Yes the moon mission is essential. It is such successes that gain the doers respect of the world. Some may question the economic wisdom of such achievments for a developing country like ours, but these achievements encourage, cheer and make everyone feel great and that is a very important achievement in a wholly gloomy phase through which we are passing at present. I do not think the cost is very high as compared to the GDP. Criticizing such achievements as wasteful is a habit continuing since 1950s when really there was very little money to meet the needs. But, now the country should go ahead to greater achievement in any and every field of enterprise wherever we score. We should have for ourselves goals and objectives that trascend our internal problems of divisive policies of the political parties, screechy speeches that start riots and to get us out of the habit of self diminution. Aim high, achieve and go ahead, forget smaller aims down on the earth.

Yes. And No.
Yes, we must prove our scientific credibility and join the top notch in space science.
No, we must stop spending our Taxed money to research work without any material gain. The tax Govt deducts must be channelised only to development of the nation and its people. In fact, all expenditure towards such development should come only from High Networth Individuals, Politicians' black money, Industries making astronomical profits due to Govt policies, Big land holders, Big Real Estate Developers et al. Our hard earned money gets taxed @ 33% plus surcharge without any previlege must not be thrown into the craters of the moon.
