Congress and BJP are the biggest parties in their respective alliances with other smaller parties. UPA stands for United Progressive Alliance and NDA stands for National Democratic Alliance.

Congress is not UPA, it is a part of UPA i.e., United Progressive Alliance. Likewise BJP is a part of NDA i.e., National Democratic Alliance.
UPA is a coalition of : Congress; Trinamool Congress; National Conference; NCP; DMK etc
NDA is a coalition of : BJP; Shrimoni Akali Dal; SS; JDU; INLD; RLD etc.
