Going by what "Ratan Tata" had to say about him, I feel Cyrus Mistry will exceed the expectations. He is young, dynamic and has an astute brain. He has strong operational experience combined with financial acumen. Also, I feel he will bring in a very young outlook and some innovative ideas that the youth of today would easily relate to.
It is important that he is not overburdened with expectation and he is given enough time/space to prove himself. He has another year to keep learning as Deputy Chairman of Tata Sons before he becomes the chairman in December 2012. I am sure he would come good.

Well, it's a tricky questions, when sometimes expectations themeselves are wrong. If you remember in 90s, ITC's succession was much hyped, when Yogi Deveshwar too over from K. L. Chugh, who was famous for his fight with BAT and was considered a maverick CEO. People were skeptic about Yogi's success after KLC's successful run. But well, when look back ITC's growth in past decade, it is understandable that Yogi surpassed KLC's performance in much adverse conditions against tobacco business. Now ITC is more famous for other businesses like hotel and fashion than its earlier core - tobacco.
